2000 NHL Expansion Draft

For more information see the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft and 1999 NHL Expansion Draft

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild were the last two expansion clubs allowed into the NHL, admitted in 1997. They wouldn't take to the ice until 2000, after the completion of the construction of their new arenas: Nationwide Arena in Columbus and the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Blue Jackets hired Doug MacLean as general manager on February 11, 1998, about two-and-a-half months after he was dismissed as the Florida Panthers' head coach. MacLean also assumed the title of president shortly thereafter.

The Wild hired former Flames GM Doug Risebrough over a year later, on September 2, 1999.

The rules of the 2000 expansion draft were almost exactly the same as the rules of the 1999 and 1998 expansion drafts. Existing clubs were allowed to protect either up to one goalie, five defencemen and nine forwards or up to two goalies, three defencemen and seven forwards. The Blue Jackets and Wild would alternate selections in a 'snaking' pattern (ABBABAAB) and take two players from each of the 26 existing clubs participating in the draft (a total of 52). Neither the Atlanta Thrashers nor the Nashville Predators would participate, being that they had only taken to the ice one and two years before, respectively.

Each existing club was mandated to expose players with a minimum level of experience. If a team protected two goalies they had to offer a goalie with a minimum of 10 games played in 1999-2000, or 25 games over the course of 1998-99 and 1999-2000. A "game played" in this case was defined as a minimum 31 minutes in a game. A team protecting only one goalie did not have to offer a goalie with any NHL experience. Each team had to offer at least one defenceman and two forwards with 40 games played in the 1999-2000 season or 70 in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.

All first- and second-year professionals were exempt from selection as were any unsigned draft choices, except choices from Europe from 1996 or earlier.

Of the exposed players the Blue Jackets and Wild would select three goalies, eight defencemen and 13 forwards, and two more players of any position. Any existing club that lost a goalie could not lose a defenceman, and no more than one defenceman or goalie could be chosen from an existing club. Each of the new clubs could select a maximum of six players apiece that were due to become free agents of any sort.

The deadline for protected lists was 4:00 pm Mountain Daylight Time on June 12, two days after the Devils beat the Stars for the Stanley Cup. A trade freeze also went into effect at the same time, and would last until the end of the expansion draft on June 23. Prior to the trade deadline a few minor trades were made between the existing clubs:

  • Blackhawks traded Steve Passmore to the Kings for a 4th round draft pick in 2000 or 2001 to the Blackhawks (Blackhawks chose 2000, and selected Olli Malmivaara) on May 1
  • Mighty Ducks traded Trent Hunter to the Islanders for the Blue Jackets' 4th round pick in 2000 (Jonas Ronnqvist) on May 23
  • Hurricanes traded Paul Ranheim to the Flyers for an 8th round pick in 2002 (traded later to the Lightning, who selected Darren Reid) on May 31
  • Mighty Ducks traded the rights to Stephen Peat to the Capitals for a 4th round pick in 2000 (traded later to the Canadiens, who traded to Penguins, who selected Michel Ouellet) on June 1
  • Lightning traded the rights to Eric Beaudoin to the Panthers for a 7th round pick in 2000 (Marek Priechodsky) on June 1
  • Lightning traded Kevin Hodson to the Canadiens for a 7th round pick in 2000 (traded later to the Flyers, who selected John Eichelberger) on June 2
  • Lightning traded Rich Parent to the Senators for a 7th round pick in 2000 (traded later to the Sabres, who selected Paul Gaustad) on June 4
  • Flames traded Jean-Sebastien Giguere to the Mighty Ducks for a 2nd round pick in 2000 (traded later to the Capitals, who selected Matt Pettinger) on June 10
  • Mighty Ducks traded Ed Ward to the Devils for a 7th round pick in 2001 (Tony Martensson) on June 12
  • Thrashers traded Steve Staios to the Devils for a 9th round pick in 2000 (Simon Gamache) on June 12
  • Blackhawks traded Mark Janssens to the Flyers for a 9th round pick in 2000 (Arne Ramholt) on June 12
  • Predators traded Patrick Cote to the Oilers for the Coyotes' 5th round pick in 2000 (Matt Koalska) on June 12
  • Senators traded Patrick Traverse to the Mighty Ducks for Joel Kwiatkowski on June 12

The most notable trade in retrospect was the Flames trading Giguere to the Ducks. Giguere was about to become a restricted free agent and there was a risk that either one of the Blue Jackets or Wild would have taken the former first-round pick. Instead the Flames dealt him to Anaheim, getting something for him, and Anaheim took the risk that one of Guy Hebert or Corey Hirsch would be selected.

The Blue Jackets and Wild also made several trades, some of which were made with existing clubs on the condition that certain players would or would not be picked in the expansion draft.

  • Islanders traded Chris Nielsen to the Blue Jackets for a 4th round pick in 2000 (traded to the Ducks, who selected Jonas Ronnqvist) and a 9th round pick in 2000 (Dmitri Altarev) on May 11
  • Ducks traded Espen Knutsen to the Blue Jackets for a 4th round pick in 2001(Vladimir Korsunov) on May 25
  • Avalanche traded Marc Denis to the Blue Jackets for a 2nd round pick in 2000 (traded to the Hurricanes, who selected Tomas Kurka) on June 7
  • Sharks traded Jan Caloun, a 9th round pick in 2000 (Martin Paroulek) and a conditional pick in 2001 to the Blue Jackets for future considerations on June 11
  • Sharks traded Andy Sutton, a 7th round pick in 2000 (Peter Bartos) and a 3rd round pick in 2001 (later traded to the Thrashers, who traded to the Penguins, who traded to the Blue Jackets, who selected Aaron Johnson) to the Wild for an 8th round pick in 2001 (traded to the Flames, who selected Joe Campbell) and future considerations on June 11
  • Devils traded Krzysztof Oliwa and future considerations (the rights to Deron Quint) to the Blue Jackets for a 3rd round pick in 2001(Brandon Nolan) and future considerations (Turner Stevenson) on June 12
  • Stars traded Manny Fernandez and Brad Lukowich to the Wild for a 3rd round pick in 2000 (Joel Lundqvist) and a 4th round pick in 2002 (traded back to the Wild, who traded to the Kings, who selected Aaron Rome) on June 12

The Sharks' trades with the Blue Jackets and Wild were made in order to keep goalie Evgeni Nabokov safe; that was the "future considerations" in both cases. The Avalanche traded Marc Denis to the Blue Jackets as part of a more elaborate deal that I will explain below.

The foremost question on your mind, dear reader, is probably "Why did the Blue Jackets chose Rick Tabaracci with the first pick?". I personally have a soft spot for "the Tabby Cat", but Tabaracci was 31 years old at the time, an unrestricted free agent, and not a highly sought after one at that. Teams that lost free agents were entitled to receive compensatory entry draft picks, and the more those free agents were paid the higher the pick. The Predators' David Poile got a couple compensatory picks after taking Mike Richter and Uwe Krupp in the 1998 Expansion Draft; those two players were expected to receive large contracts and therefore high compensatory picks. Tabaracci wasn't going to sign a big contract with anyone.

Rick Tabaracci was chosen first overall in this expansion draft because of the deal the Avalanche made with the Blue Jackets for Marc Denis two weeks earlier. Denis was a promising young player who was expected to become a great starting goaltender. Most expansion teams start out with a pair of older goalies who hold down the fort until a younger, better goalie can be found. Doug MacLean thought he had scored himself his goalie-of-the-future by trading for Denis. The catch was he not only had to give the Avalanche his 2nd round entry draft pick for Denis, he also had to take Rick Tabaracci in the expansion draft. In taking Tabaracci it meant that the Avalanche wouldn't lose another goalie or defenceman in the draft. It guaranteed that the only other player they would lose would be one of their exposed forwards, any of which they could have done without.

This wasn't the only selection made as part of a side deal. Immediately following the draft the Wild and Blue Jackets made three trades apiece:

  • Sabres traded Matt Davidson, Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre, the Sharks' 5th round pick in 2000 (Tyler Kolarik) and a 5th round pick in 2001 (traded later to the Flames, who traded to the Red Wings, who selected Andreas Jamtin) to the Blue Jackets for future considerations
  • Canadiens traded a 2nd round pick in 2001(Kiel MacLeod) to the Blue Jackets for future considerations
  • Bruins traded a 5th round pick in 2000 (Scott Heffernan) to the Blue Jackets for future considerations
  • Flames traded Dan Cavanaugh and an 8th round pick in 2000 or 2001 (Wild chose 2001—Jake Riddle) to the Wild for Mike Vernon
  • Stars traded Aaron Gavey, Pavel Patera, an 8th round pick in 2000 (Eric Johansson) and the Wild's 4th round pick in 2002 (traded to the Kings, who selected Aaron Rome) to the Wild for Brad Lukowich, a 3rd round pick in 2001 (Yared Hagos) and a 9th round pick in 2001 (Dale Sullivan)
  • Devils traded Brad Bombardir to the Wild for Chris Terreri and a 9th round pick in 2000 (traded to the Lightning, who selected Thomas Ziegler)
  • Coyotes traded the rights to Rickard Wallin to the Wild for Joe Juneau

The Sabres traded Davidson, Grand-Pierre and the draft picks to the Blue Jackets in exchange for the Blue Jackets taking goalie Dwayne Roloson and winger Geoff Sanderson. Roloson was expendable—the Sabres elected to protect Marty Biron instead—and losing a goalie meant not losing a defenceman, such as Jason Woolley or Richard Smehlik. Sanderson was an offensively-minded forward who struggled under the Sabres' defence-first style of play at the time. In six seasons in Hartford he had seasons of 34, 36, 41 and 46 goals; in Buffalo the best he mustered was 13. Sanderson had been left exposed in the 1999 Expansion Draft but the Thrashers passed. Sanderson would go on to play over three seasons in Columbus and lead the team in scoring that first season with 30 goals and 56 points. Roloson on the other hand was not tendered a qualifying offer to retain his rights and became an unrestricted free agent. He signed a contract with the AHL's Worcester IceCats, and in 2001 returned to the NHL after signing a contract with (ironically) the Minnesota Wild.

The Canadiens traded the draft pick to the Blue Jackets for the Blue Jackets taking Fred Chabot. They did the exact same thing with the Predators in 1998. Losing Chabot meant that they wouldn't lose another goalie or a defenceman such as Eric Weinrich or Stephane Robidas.

Similarly the Wild had acquired Manny Fernandez from the Stars as their goalie-of-the-future, so their goalie selections were also not particularly imperative. Mike Vernon was 37 years old and approaching the end of his career. The Flames were almost certain to lose backup goalie Grant Fuhr to retirement and after trading away J.S. Giguere their only other goalies were RFA Andrei Trefilov and 21-year-old Tyrone Garner. Trefilov was on his way back to Europe and Garner needed much more pro experience if he ever hoped to make the NHL, so the Flames acquired Vernon for a former 2nd round draft pick (Dan Cavanaugh eventually played six years in the AHL, never making a single appearance in an NHL game) and an 8th round pick (a token sum).

The Devils had stocked up on extra forwards prior to the draft, adding Ed Ward and Steve Staios in separate trades, hoping to lose these surplus forwards and keep their Stanley Cup champion roster intact. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello took the risk no one would take the 35-year-old Chris Terreri, who other than a couple years in San Jose and Chicago had spent his career in New Jersey. Doug Risebrough called Lamoriello's bluff and took Terreri anyway. There were some extenuating circumstances at play. Lou Lamoriello is famous for his loyalty to his players, and he had known Terreri since he was head coach of the Providence College Friars hockey team and Chris Terreri was a 17-year-old freshman. Terreri was also close friends with Devils' starter Martin Brodeur. So, following the draft Lamoriello traded Bombardir to the Wild to get Terreri back. In retrospect it was misguided from a hockey operations point of view: less than a year later Terreri was traded to the New York Islanders due to his poor play and retired as a player at the end of the season. But like I said Lou Lamoriello is famous for being loyal to his players; when Terreri retired as a player Lamoriello hired him as the Devils' AHL affiliate's goaltending coach. (Chris Terreri has been the Devils' goalie coach since 2010.)

The Blue Jackets and Wild finished 23rd and 25th overall respectively in their first season. They were well out of playoff contention however they could take some solace in being far better than their expansion brethren Atlanta Thrashers, who finished 28th overall with a scant 60 points. By their third season the Wild had improved to the point that they made the playoffs for the first time, and ended up going to the conference finals (they were upset by the Mighty Ducks). In 13 seasons the Wild have made the playoffs five times. Success has been a little harder to come by in Columbus. The team did not improve upon its inaugural season's record until their fifth year, and in their 13 seasons of play the Blue Jackets have only made the playoffs twice.

Follow-up Question: How did the Islanders end up with only four players exposed?

(June 18, 2016)

In the comments below someone with the handle 'Admin' (Hi! Thanks for the question!) has asked [paraphrased] "How did the Islanders end up with only four players exposed?" The short answer is: they followed the rules. I feel your question deserves a more comprehensive answer than that though, so let's explore that together.

First, let's go over the rules:

  • Protected list: they could protect either two goalies, three defencemen and five forwards, or one goalie, five defencemen and nine forwards. They elected to do the latter.
  • Players with fewer than three years of pro experience were not available for selection by the Blue Jackets or Wild, and did not have to be protected.
  • The Islanders—given they protected one goalie, five defencemen and nine forwards—had to offer at least one defenceman and two forwards with 40 games played in the 1999-2000 season or 70 combined games played across the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons, and one goalie with any experience.

Now let's go over the Islanders' roster at the end of the season, broken down by goalies, defencemen and forwards.

Goalies: Wade Flaherty, Roberto Luongo, Steve Valiquette, Kevin Weekes

Luongo (one year of pro experience) and Valiquette (two years) were exempt by virtue of their inexperience. The Islanders had to leave at least one goalie exposed, so they chose to protect Weekes and expose Flaherty. In choosing to protect only one goalie the Islanders were entitled to protect five defencemen and nine forwards.

Defencemen: Mathieu Biron, Eric Brewer, Eric Cairns, Zdeno Chara, Vladimir Chebaturkin, Ray Giroux, Ian Herbers, Jamie Heward, Kenny Jonsson, Evgeny Korolev, Jamie Rivers, Ray Schultz

Heward was claimed on waivers by the Blue Jackets on May 26, a little over two weeks before the draft. Chebaturkin's contract expired and he signed a deal with the Blues three days before the draft. Biron, Brewer, Giroux and Korolev were exempt given their inexperience.

Remember that five out of the remaining six could be protected. They protected Cairns, Chara, Jonsson, Rivers and Schultz, and left Herbers exposed.

Forwards: Mikael Andersson, Tim Connolly, Mariusz Czerkawski, Johan Davidsson, Ted Drury, Josh Green, Sean Haggerty, Brad Isbister, Olli Jokinen, Jason Krog, Claude Lapointe, Mark Lawrence, Mats Lindgren, Petr Mika, Bill Muckalt, Dimitri Nabokov, Vladimir Orszagh, Scott Pearson, Dave Scatchard, Mike Watt, Steve Webb

Haggerty and Watt were claimed off waivers by the Predators about three weeks before the draft. Andersson, Davidsson, Orszagh and Pearson's contracts expired and they signed new ones with European clubs prior to the draft. Connolly, Krog, Mika, and Muckalt were exempt given their inexperience.

That left Czerkawski, Drury, Green, Isbister, Jokinen, Lapointe, Lawrence, Lindgren, Nabokov, Scatchard and Webb, and of those 11 players the Islanders could protect nine and leave two exposed. The two they left exposed had to have at least 40 NHL games played in the '99-'00 season, or 70 over '98-'99 and '99-'00. Nabokov had only played in 30 NHL games over that two-season span, so by default one of the spots on the protected list had to be used on him. The remaining spots on the list were used on Czerkawski, Green, Isbister, Jokinen, Lapointe, Lindgren, Scatchard and Webb, leaving Drury and Lawrence up for grabs.

And there you have it: they were a young team with many players not having to be protected due to the limited length of their professional careers, they only protected one goalie which gave them the option to protect the most defencemen and forwards possible, and they ended up only having to offer the absolute bare minimum of one goalie, one defenceman and a pair of forwards. Also keep in mind that they had a fairly small total number of players under contract to begin with, almost certainly a result of the penny-pinching of then-owners Howard Milstein and Steve Gluckstern. Milstein and Gluckstern sold the team to Charles Wang and Sanjay Kumar in April, 2000.

How did the Canucks draft the Sedin twins?

It seems like a simple enough question, doesn't it?

Twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin, from Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, had played hockey together since they were little kids. Daniel, the scoring winger, and Henrik, the playmaking centre, began playing for their hometown MoDo hockey club in 1994. In their first season playing for the MoDo under-16 junior club they finished second in the U16 championship to Djurgårdens, and finished first the next year. In 1996 as 16-year-olds they began playing for MoDo's under-20 junior club and led the team to a second-place finish. By the time they turned 17 they began playing at the top level, Elitserien.

In the 1998-99 season, as 18-year-olds, they jointly won the Guldpucken—the "Golden Puck"—the award for best player in the Elite League. MoDo finished atop the standings but lost the Le Mat Trophy to Brynas, with Daniel leading the team in scoring in the regular season and playoffs and Henrik third in the regular season and second in the playoffs.

The hype surrounding the brothers was enormous going into the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. They were the best young prospects from Europe by far, the best in a long time. There was, however, a catch: if they were going to come over to North America they wanted to play together. Any NHL team that wanted to draft one was expected to draft the other, otherwise neither would come over. At least that was the rumour spread by their agent, Mike Barnett.

The other consensus top-three prospect was Patrik Stefan, a Czech centreman who left the Czech Republic as a 17-year-old to play in North America. Rather than go through the Canadian Major Junior system or the NCAA he signed a 25-game try-out with the Long Beach Ice Dogs of the IHL. His try-out was a little rough but he acclimated to the North American game very well by the '98-'99 season. In 33 games playing full-time with the Ice Dogs he scored 35 points. Not bad for a kid playing with men.

Despite the glowing reviews of his performance on the ice the fact that he was limited to only 33 games in the '98-'99 season drew a lot of negative attention. He had suffered more than one concussion that year.

After the expansion draft on June 25, 1999, Canucks GM Brian Burke was swiftly working out the details of the trades that would get him both Sedin brothers at the entry draft the very next morning. Going into the entry draft the Tampa Bay Lightning, the last-place team, held the first overall pick. The expansion Atlanta Thrashers held the second overall pick, the Canucks had the third pick, and the Blackhawks held the fourth. Patrik Stefan and Daniel Sedin were expected to be the first two picks, so Henrik would almost certainly be available when the Canucks made the third pick. Somehow he needed to wrestle one of the top two picks from either the Lightning or Thrashers, keep his third overall pick, and have assurances that whoever ended up with the first or second pick picked Stefan instead of Daniel Sedin.

The first deal Burke made was with Bob Murray of the Blackhawks. The Canucks would trade defenceman Bryan McCabe and their first-round pick in the 2000 or 2001 Entry Draft to the Blackhawks for fourth overall in '99. The deal was agreed upon on the evening of the 25th and filed later so as to keep Don Waddell of the Thrashers and Rick Dudley of the Lightning in the dark on Burke's machinations.

In the wee hours of the morning Burke was in discussions with the Thrashers about the second overall pick. Waddell was willing to pick one of Daniel Sedin or Stefan, but Rick Dudley wasn't going to take Stefan. Burke needed to get the first overall pick from the Lightning, and even if he did there was still a chance that the Thrashers would take one of the Sedin twins with the second. He needed assurances from Waddell that he would take Stefan instead. Burke needed to make it worth Waddell's while, so Burke made him an offer: he'd give Waddell first overall, on the condition that Waddell used it on Stefan. Waddell agreed, but it was all contingent on the Canucks acquiring the first overall pick from the Lightning.

The Lightning for their part had picked first overall in 1998 and chose Vincent Lecavalier after engineering a trade for the pick with the San Jose Sharks. Another first overall pick wouldn't have hurt but they were amenable to trading the '99 first overall pick for other assets. Rich Winter—Patrik Stefan's agent—wouldn't release Stefan's medical records to any of the top teams, which scared off Rick Dudley. If he kept first overall he was going to pick Daniel Sedin.

When Burke showed up at the FleetCenter on the morning of the 26th he laid it all out to Dudley and Lightning Assistant GM Jay Feaster on the draft floor: he had the third pick, he acquired the fourth pick from the Blackhawks, he had an agreement with Don Waddell that Waddell would take Stefan, and Burke emphasized that he was not leaving the draft without both Sedin twins.

Dudley was also in discussions with the Rangers. The Rangers wanted to take Calgary Hitmen forward Pavel Brendl, who probably would have been available at the fourth overall pick, but the Canucks had acquired fourth from the Blackhawks. If the Lightning could get the Rangers the fourth overall pick they would trade Niklas Sundstrom, Dan Cloutier and their first and third round picks in 2000 for it.

The plan was set into motion: Burke acquired the first overall pick from the Lightning for the Blackhawks' fourth overall pick and two third round picks—the compensatory pick for the signing of Jyrki Lumme and the Sabres' pick, which they had acquired earlier for Geoff Sanderson. Then he traded the first pick to the Thrashers for the second overall pick and a conditional third round pick in 2000. The Lightning traded the fourth overall pick to the Rangers for Sundstrom, Cloutier and their first and third round picks the next year.

Going into draft day the Lightning held the first pick, the Thrashers had second, the Canucks third, the Blackhawks fourth. At the end of the day the order went Thrashers, Canucks, Canucks, Rangers. The Thrashers took Stefan first, the Canucks took both Sedin twins with second and third picks (Daniel officially went first) and the Rangers took Brendl.

Brian Burke's manoeuvring at the '99 draft is still considered some of the most shrewd asset management in NHL history. 15 years later the Sedin brothers still play for the Canucks, and are the club's all-time leading scorers (Henrik, despite being chosen after his brother, has more points than Daniel).

1998 NHL Expansion Draft

As I explained in my post about the 1992 NHL Expansion, at a Board of Governors meeting in December, 1989 the National Hockey League decided to expand from 21 member clubs to 28 by the turn of the century. They added a team in 1991, another two in 1992, two more in 1993: five down, two to go.

The next round of expansion began in the fall of 1996. Eleven prospective ownership groups from nine different cities made formal applications for an NHL expansion franchise. Groups from Hamilton, Norfolk (Virginia), Oklahoma City and three from Houston were unsuccessful in convincing the NHL's expansion committee that they merited franchises, while four bids were accepted and conditional franchises were awarded to groups in Atlanta, Columbus (Ohio), St. Paul and Nashville on June 25, 1997. (The eleventh bid from a group in Raleigh, North Carolina was withdrawn early due to stalled negotiations over the building of a new arena there. In May of 1997 Peter Karmanos, owner of the Hartford Whalers, announced that his team was relocating to North Carolina to begin play in the fall of '97; the Carolina Hurricanes played at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro for two seasons until the new arena in Raleigh was completed.) The NHL met its goal of having 28 member clubs by 2000.

The four new franchises wouldn't all begin playing at the same time. Columbus and St. Paul would begin play in 2000, Atlanta in 1999 and Nashville in 1998. Nashville would go first, only a year after the announcement, because their new arena was already built and open. (Philips Arena in Atlanta broke ground 20 days before the expansion announcement. The new arenas in Columbus and St. Paul wouldn't break ground until 1998.)

It didn't take Nashville owner Craig Leipold long to begin assembling his hockey operations staff. David Poile, long-time general manager of the Washington Capitals, was hired to the same position in Nashville on July 9, 1997. Head coach Barry Trotz and assistant coach Paul Gardner were hired less than a month later; they had filled the same positions with the Portland Pirates of the AHL, top affiliate of the Capitals. After the team's logo was revealed in September they held a "name the team" contest: they would be known as the Nashville Predators.

The Rules of the Draft

The rules of the 1998 Expansion Draft were similar to the rules of the draft in 1993 with a few changes.

In 1993 the existing clubs were allowed to protect one goaltender, five defencemen and nine forwards, which had significant ramifications on their rosters. In the weeks leading up to the 1993 Expansion Draft several trades involving goaltenders were made in order for the existing teams to better position themselves to stem their losses due to the draft. John Vanbiesbrouck, Ron Hextall, Mark Fitzpatrick, Stephane Beauregard, Jimmy Waite, Peter Sidorkiewicz and Craig Billington were among the goalies moved (Vanbiesbrouck and Fitzpatrick were chosen in the draft).

It was decided that in the 1998, 1999 and 2000 drafts the existing clubs would be allowed protect the same number of players as they had in 1993 or they could choose to protect two goaltenders, three defencemen and seven forwards instead. They could enjoy the privilege of protecting two goaltenders at the expense of leaving more defencemen and forwards exposed.

It was known that there would be an expansion draft in 1999 for the Atlanta Thrashers so the existing clubs were afforded a couple more small concessions in 1998: if they lost a goaltender in 1998 they would be exempt from losing one in the 1999 draft, and they would be allowed to each protect an additional forward or defenceman in 1998. (In effect the teams had the option of protecting one goaltender, five defencemen and ten forwards; one goalie, six defencemen and nine forwards; two goalies, three defencemen and eight forwards; or two goalies, four defencemen and seven forwards.) First and second year players were exempt, as were unsigned North American entry draft choices. Unsigned European draft choices from the 1994 Entry Draft and earlier drafts were eligible for claim.

The existing clubs were compelled to expose players with minimum levels of NHL experience as well, as they had been in the 1993 draft. Each would have to expose at least one defenceman and two forwards with a minimum of 40 games played in the NHL in 1997-98 or 75 games over the course of the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. The goaltender requirements would depend on whether the existing club was protecting one or two goalies. If the team protected a pair of goalies it had to expose one that had played in 10 games in 1997-98 or 25 over the course of 1996-97 and 1997-98. (A "game" in this case was considered to mean any game in which a goalie played for at least 31 minutes.) If the existing club protected only one goalie they did not have to expose a goalie with NHL experience.

The Predators would choose only one player from each of the existing clubs, a total of 26: three goaltenders, eight defencemen, thirteen forwards and two more players from any other position. In the days leading up to the draft David Poile told the media he would use those two 'extra' picks on goaltenders.

The draft was nominally held Friday, June 26, 1998 but there was no real set time. It wasn't really a draft per se because the Predators were the only ones participating. From midnight on the morning of Friday the 19th (the time a trade freeze went into effect) to the time of the news conference at Marine Midland Arena in Buffalo on Friday the 26th David Poile had free reign to negotiate who he would take from each of the existing clubs. Poile didn't have to worry about competing with another club for expansion draft selections so he could concentrate on finding precisely who he wanted from each of the existing clubs, or he could negotiate considerations from the other clubs in exchange for not picking certain players. Friday the 26th was really just the date of the press conference to announce the selections and was the day the 'official' transactions were filed with the NHL Central Registry.

Protected Lists

A league-wide trade freeze occurred between midnight Friday, June 19 and immediately following the draft on Friday June 26th. The protected lists were filed by the end of the day on Sunday the 21st.

In the days leading up to the expansion draft the existing clubs made a few trades. Some noteworthy trades:

  • Marian Cisar traded from the Kings to the Predators for future considerations on June 1 (making Marian Cisar the very first Nashville Predator)
  • Craig Janney from the Coyotes to the Lightning for Louie Debrusk and a 5th round pick in the 1998 Entry Draft (Jay Leach) on June 11
  • The rights to Josef Beranek from the Penguins to the Oilers for Bobby Dollas and Tony Hrkac on June 16
  • Dave Roche and Ken Wregget from the Penguins to the Flames for Todd Hlushko and German Titov on June 17
And on the 18th, the last day of trading before the draft:
  • Doug Bodger from the Devils to the Kings for a 4th round pick in '98 (Pierre Dagenais)
  • Eric Fichaud from the Islanders to the Oilers for Mike Watt
  • Jean-François Jomphe from the Mighty Ducks to the Coyotes for Jim McKenzie
  • Bill Ranford from the Capitals to the Lightning for a 3rd round pick in '98 (Todd Hornung) and a 2nd round pick in '99 (Michal Sivek)
  • Steve Shields and a 4th round pick in '98 (Miroslav Zalesak) from the Sabres to the Sharks for Kay Whitmore, a 2nd round pick in '98 (Jaroslav Kristek) and a 5th round pick in 2000 (Tyler Kolarik)

As always seemed to be the case at expansion drafts in the 1990s many of the trades before the draft involved goaltenders.

The Oilers acquired goaltender Fichaud because they weren't going to protect Curtis Joseph. Joseph's contract was expiring and although they wanted to keep him it was expected that his salary demands would not be met. (Ultimately Joseph signed a four-year contract worth over $6 million per season with the Maple Leafs in the off-season; he had been making $2.3 million with the Oilers.) Fichaud was young and promising insurance. (Backup Bob Essensa was 33 years old and also a pending unrestricted free agent.)

Similarly the Lightning felt they needed to bolster their goaltending and the Capitals didn't want to lose Ranford in the expansion draft for nothing. The Capitals protected Olaf Kolzig (fresh off a trip to the Stanley Cup finals) and the Lightning protected Ranford, hoping the former starting goalie could improve his play in Tampa and help the team recover from the worst season it had ever had. (Ranford played one year in Tampa and didn't help much.)

The Sabres suspected that backup goalie Steve Shields (who was admirable in relief of Dominik Hasek in the 1997 playoffs) would be chosen by the Predators if he was left exposed so he was dealt to the Sharks instead. At the time the Sharks' goalies, Kelly Hrudey and Mike Vernon, were 36 and 34 years old respectively and Hrudey was a pending free agent (he retired over the summer and became an analyst for Hockey Night in Canada). Shields split time with Vernon in 1998-99 and was named the Sharks' starting goalie in 1999-2000, a position he held briefly until it was usurped by Evgeni Nabokov in 2001.

The Flames acquired Ken Wregget from the Penguins hoping to improve their goaltending in 1998-99; in 1997-98 Rick Tabaracci, Dwayne Roloson and Tyler Moss combined for a league-worst 0.892 save percentage. Wregget was 34 years old and spent most of the 1997-98 season injured, and he did the same in 1998-99. Ultimately Wregget only played 27 games for the Flames in that one season, leaving for Detroit as a free agent in the summer of 1999. The Flames' goaltending in 1998-99 was disastrous until they signed Fred Brathwaite from the Canadian national team mid-season.

You'll notice that the Predators' list of selections includes several Group III unrestricted free agents: Al Iafrate, Uwe Krupp and Mike Richter. There's a piece of a trivia that a lot of people probably won't believe: Mike Richter was an original Nashville Predator. The reason why David Poile selected these unrestricted free agents was that under the collective bargaining agreement of the time a team that lost Group III free agents would receive compensatory draft picks for the (net) loss. Poile didn't really want to keep these players, he hoped that they would sign somewhere else for a lot of money. The more a player was paid the higher compensatory draft pick that their former team would receive.

Mike Richter re-signed with the Rangers on July 15, 1998 and the Predators received the 52nd overall pick in the 1999 draft, which they used to select Adam Hall. Uwe Krupp signed with the Red Wings on July 7, 1998 and the Predators received the 67th overall pick in the 1999 draft, which they used to select Jan Lasak. Al Iafrate was signed by the Hurricanes on July 14, 1998. He never played a game for the Hurricanes and announced his retirement September 1. The Predators received nothing for him.

In the hours that followed the expansion draft picks announcement the Predators made a series of trades with a smattering of teams. Most of these trades were pre-arranged: the Predators were being compensated for picking certain players from certain teams, or from not picking certain players from other teams. Most of the compensation going the other way from the Predators was "future considerations".

On the 26th of June, after the draft announcement, the following trades were announced:

  • Flames traded Jim Dowd to the Predators for future considerations
  • Blackhawks traded Sergei Krivokrasov to the Predators for future considerations
  • Kings traded Kimmo Timonen and Jan Vopat to the Predators for future considerations
  • Canadiens traded Sebastien Bordeleau to the Predators for future considerations
  • Flyers traded Dominic Roussel and Jeff Staples to the Predators for a 7th round draft pick in 1998 (Cam Ondrik)
  • Blues traded Darren Turcotte and either the highest compensatory pick they received in the 1999 draft or a 2nd round pick in 2000 (the Blues received the 40th overall pick in 1999 for losing Brett Hull to free agency; this pick was traded to the Predators, who traded it to the Panthers; the Panthers selected Alex Auld)
  • Sharks traded Ville Peltonen to the Predators for a 5th round pick in 1998 (traded to the Coyotes, who selected Josh Blackburn)

Reportedly the Flames gave Dowd to the Predators for not selecting one of their goaltenders. The Flames only protected Ken Wregget, allowing them to protect more of their defencemen and forwards. The Blackhawks reportedly did the same for not selecting Chris Terreri. The Kings traded Timonen and Vopat to the Predators for having chosen Frederic Chabot and (reportedly) not choosing defenceman Garry Galley. Being that Chabot was a goalie it meant that the Kings would be exempt from losing a goalie to the Atlanta Thrashers in the 1999 Expansion Draft.

The Canadiens sent Sebastien Bordeleau to the Predators for similar reasons: in 1998 they didn't have to protect goalie José Théodore but they would have to in 1999. Rather than forcing themselves to protect Théodore and Jocelyn Thibault in 1999—thus having to expose more defencemen and forwards to the Atlanta Thrashers—they made a deal with the Predators to select goalie prospect Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun only played a single game for Montreal, giving up four goals in the first period of a game against the Flyers on February 6, 1997. When the Predators chose him from the Habs he was out of shape and his career was going nowhere fast as back up to Théodore on the AHL's Fredericton Canadiens. Théodore would become the Canadiens' starter and played over 600 games in his career until he retired in 2013. Vokoun would go on to become the Predators' starter and has played in 700 regular season games to date, winning 300 of them. (14 more career victories than Théodore.)

Other trades in the weeks that followed included the Predators trading Mike Sullivan to the Coyotes for a draft pick, the Kings sending Vitali Yachmenev to the Predators for future considerations, the Stars getting Tony Hrkac from the Predators for future considerations, and Doug Brown being traded back to the Red Wings by the Predators for Petr Sykora ("the other Petr Sykora", the defenceman born in 1978 not the winger born in 1976), a third round pick in 1999 (traded to the Oilers who selected Mike Comrie) and a conditional draft pick in 1999 (the 124th overall selection which the Wings got for losing Bob Rouse in free agency—the Predators chose Alexandr Krevsun).

The Predators also traded Jim Dowd and goalie Mikhail Shtalenkov to the Oilers just before the season started (October 1) for defencemen Drake Berehowsky and Greg de Vries and goalie Eric Fichaud. The Oilers re-signed Bob Essensa and felt Fichaud was expendable, I guess.
